In the 1950s, Thomas and Bernice Plumb set up
Plumbs to be a market shop for upholstery and covers. A decade later, their son Geoff took the business forward by developing it into a mail order company with a specialisation in a niche area of sofa and arm chair covers.
About two decades ago, it expanded into the Home Consultancy area which replaced the nature of its business from a retail store. In the 1990s, home consultancy was responsible for half the company’s sales and in the next few years, it went up to 90% of the total sales, while the balance came from mail order and sub-contract areas.
Today,
Plumbs manufactures more than 1000 made-to-order sofa covers and today is a professional customer focused organisation producing over 1,000 made-to-measure furnishings, re-upholstery and curtains each week. To support it in its production schedules, it has an in-house photo studio and other technology and continuous training for its staff.
Now, with 45 year's experience, this company continues to offer the widest range of upholstery and furnishings of all kinds and measurements to cover any furniture style. The Company is headquartered at Preston and employs 400 people apart from having 250 consultants all over the country.

Plumbs’ home consultants are well trained to advise customers on the right shade of natural fabrics, bright, sunny shades and muted colours which can give a completely different look to their furniture and home.
Plumbs loose covers can be plain or semi-plain, floral, mini patterns and contemporary patterns, among many others from its entire range of 350 fabric designs.
This Company’s upholstery material usually cover most branded furniture such as Multiyork, Parker Knoll, G-plan and Ercol. Apart from its own makes, material for upholstery sold here includes cotton, linen and man-made fabric and the known brands available here are Villa Nova, Sanderson, Sandown & Bourne, Panaz, Crowson and Swaffer.
