UUNET PIPEX. It was then taken over by the company Metropolitan Fibre Systems (MFS). Worldcom then bought the company and it merged again with MCI and took the name of MCI. It came to be known as Verizon business when Verizon bought it. MCI still used the domain names of Pipex and some of their infrastructure even after Dial business and the brand name of
Pipex were purchased by David Rickards in 1998. Later in 2003, the company was bought for £55 million by GX Networks. It was renamed as Pipex Communications for the preservation of the brand.
Pipex has since then bought Nildram, Host Europe, Donhost, Freedom2Surf, Homecall, Supanetwork Limited, Bulldog and Toucan. Tiscali acquired consumer broadband as well as voice division from
Pipex for £210 million in September 2007. Pipex Wireless then became Freedom4, which in turn launched the Freedom WiFi.
