In 1857, Emma and Alfred Jones began their family business of quality footwear when they opened their first shop in Bayswater, London. The shop remained open from 8 am to 8 pm and, on Saturdays, remained open till midnight.
Jones Bootmaker was the first shop to have electricity in those days — a situation that brought in the crowds to this shop to such an extent that the mounted police had to be called in to send the people away.
As time passed, nine of the couple’s sons took to the business, and eventually each of them opened his own shop under the name of A. Jones & Sons. The flagship store was at the forefront of retailing and introduced stocks of readymade shoes of three different widths. This introduced a new trend — shoe fitting.
In 1911, the Company bought a small shoe factory in Northampton which went on to make shoes for the entire enterprise. In 1994, the
Jones Bootmaker opened the first ‘CityBootmaker’ shop in Manchester’s Kings Street and then in Bluewater, Trafford Park and other places.
After the end of World War II, it expanded its business to open a big warehouse in Eastbourne, and went on to acquire more shops and modernize its existing stores. By 1955, it had more shops than its factories production capacity. So, it became a member of the famous shoe manufacturers of Northampton, Church & Co. This catapulted its growth and when Prada acquired the Church group, Jones Bootmaker was acquired by a consortium comprising Ken Bartle, Peter Phillips and Lance Clark. Since then, Jones Bootmaker has been positioned as the footwear for ‘Young Professionals.’
